Our New School Director

Dear Faculty and Staff,

We are thrilled to share some exciting news with you! Dr. Tyrus McDowell has accepted the position as our new School Director. We believe his leadership and vision will help us continue building a strong future for Griffin Christian School.

We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Dana Moore for her faithful leadership and dedication. Her contributions have been invaluable, and we are deeply appreciative of her service.

As we move forward together, we remain committed to the legacy of Christian education that has spanned more than 50 years. This is a significant moment in our journey, and we look forward to what God has in store for us as a team.

Below, you’ll find Dr. McDowell’s bio and a personal note sharing his enthusiasm to work alongside each of you and dream about the future of Griffin Christian School:

With over 26 years of dedicated experience in education, Dr. Tyrus McDowell  has dedicated his life to the career and pursuit of education.  After graduating from Griffin High School, Tyrus attended Albany State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. At Clark Atlanta University, Dr. McDowell earned a Master of Arts degree, and he later returned to Albany State University to obtain an Educational Specialist degree. In response to the call to the ministry, Dr. McDowell earned a Master of Divinity degree from Beulah Heights University. He has received a Certificate in Independent School Leadership  from Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University.  Dr. McDowell has also earned the Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!).

Dr. McDowell’s diverse career spans urban and rural settings across public, public charter, private Christian, and online private school sectors. This breadth of experience ensures he understands the unique needs of every learner. His journey in education reflects a true commitment to the "whole student," having served in nearly every capacity, including roles as a paraprofessional, high school English teacher (Gifted, AP and IB certified), a Georgia certified administrator, who has served as an assistant principal, principal, and most notably, a former principal of Griffin Christian High School.

Dr. McDowell is married to Dr. Chrystal Cox McDowell are the proud parents of son, Micah, and the pup parents of King (a 9lb Yorkie) and Kylo (a Labradoodle with no concept of personal space).
